What does the editing process look like?

Well, it can include these.

Alpha Reading

Alpha reading takes place on an early, rough version of the manuscript. The focus is on developmental elements.

Beta Reading

Beta reading takes place on a more developed manuscript. Beta readers focus on readability and how the book may be received by the target audience.

Developmental Editing

Developmental editing focuses on the big picture of the book.

It includes checking for plot holes and comments on character arcs. It will also look at pacing and the structure of a story (including chapter lengths).

Developmental editing does not look at grammar and sentence-level issues.

Line Editing

Line editing focuses on the style and structure of a manuscript. During line edits, an editor concentrates on the clarity, flow, and impact of a sentence.

Simply put, a line edit makes sure that every sentence is doing a job. It checks for varied sentence structures, strong word choices, and that the text flows.

Copy Editing

Copy editing reviews and refines a text.

This is the stage where the majority of edits for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style are picked up.

Additionally, this is the stage that an editor will ensure that a text adheres to a specific style guide: e.g. CMOS.

Proofreading

Proofreading is a final pass of a manuscript (formatted if possible).

It picks up on typos, inconsistencies in spelling and names, missing punctuation, and issues with formatting (spacing, paragraphs, alignment).

It does not reword sentences, fact-check, or move paragraphs.
